The Crash!

We'd had more cars than people after Percy and me had brought some up from town. The Jetta had been the last one in and I'd stashed it at the top of the Coast Road.

Grant knew that - but I used to take the car off the road and run it in under the branches of an old willow that reached nearly to the ground. Hidden and convenient.

Grant didn't think that way. He'd driven the Jetta home after the werewolf incident, and I suppose he thought he'd left it pretty much where I did - or that it didn't matter, since nobody else used the road anyway.

I had a split second to see that the Jetta was parked on the road - and then the truck hit it! The two machines skidded down the road together in a scream of tortured metal with the Jetta twisted across the front of the truck like a bone in a dog's teeth! The tangle hit the wall on the outer edge of the bend, the rear of the truck skidded on - and came to rest across the road, blocking it completely!

I called to tell Percy and Sam what I was going to do and then smoked down to the house to get the Caddy.

Grants' beautiful old Eldorado was waiting just inside the garage, filled and ready. I drove it up to Percy and Sam and told them to drive it down to the house to pick me up when they'd put in what they wanted. I smoked back to the house to pick up what I needed and then waited for them in the yard.

It looked as if we'd lost the demon, but I didn't think they'd want to go back to the camp, and I certainly wasn't going back myself. I wanted us to cut straight back through town to my base, so I could release Erynne.

We could pick up refreshments there and then drive straight on to LA. I was pretty sure that Grant would find somewhere for Erynne to stay there, if she didn't already have plans.
