Gail carriger of the Parasol Protectorate series has a different take on vampires and were-wolves - that they were humans with an "excess of soul". Creative types, artists, actors, singers, writers, scientists. However, when they are turned, they lose that creativity. Singers can't carry a note, writers can't write one. Scientists have no original thought (though that seems to be a function of immortality in some ways).
Me? I'd rather be a werewolf - lose track of myself for 3 days but basically the same person the rest of the month. Not really much different from being a woman in some ways.
