Theatrical Muse 335 Something known by heart

I know the notes by heart,
I may know every rhyme,
And I was taught to get
The songs right every time.
I know the pitch of keys for grief or mirth.
and I still know the ways to Earth.

I’ve had a hundred names,
Guess I remember most.
I know so many words,
The songs from coast to coast.
I know a summons calls the Gig to start,
and sure I know these things by heart.

I know the songs they sing,
From swinging clubs to crypts.
I know the things they do,
I know so many scripts.
I must know fifty ways a Gig can end.
Sometimes those memories seem to blend.

I know where I began,
And started singing true.
I know what’s in my heart,
But what is that to you?
I know that sometimes songs bring no applause,
and still I know my verse and yours.

I know that all may sing,
Their virtue or their crime,
I know the tunes will fade,
The voices lost in time.
I know one day will bring an end to song.
But until then the beat goes on.
