I mostly look in the mirror to rehearse (and I look good!) You may think that it all comes with the magic, but if I didn’t exercise I wouldn’t have the muscle to dance. When I'm in front of a mirror I’ll be watching my balance and style, trying out new steps and working out my routines. I don’t bother with mirrors much otherwise and it shouldn’t take much thought to see why.
I’m usually doing the Gig where-ever because someone put on my talisman and read the scroll to summon me – and I’ve got the right to tell them about the deal they’ve got. That song’s a lot like a sales spiel and too few of them wonder why I do it that way. English is a funny language. I can sing that I’m the hottest swing or I can put in a line about being real cool and it's all good. It’s accurate, too, it has to be.
That’s the one point in every Gig where an audience might expect me to do a big number about what I see in that mirror. I don’t, though. There are rules about that song. It has to be honest and there are things I mustn’t explain. I can make sure they know how long I’ve lived – that’s something to be proud of, in my role. I can sing about being the spirit of the music, I can even sing that I come from the imagination. I can show them that I can change my appearance with a gesture or sing from a mouth in my hand - but that’s as far as I can go.
Firewalled. (Hell, if they can’t work it out from that they ain’t worth the trouble. When I first turn up I look like they expect - and later? Well, that’s ... negotiable.
It worked like that for eons but things got difficult at the end of the last century. It should have been a standard Gig but first I got called up by a guy who was born on a Hellmouth. I don’t know where he got his imagination but nobody else’d want it. Then the whole show got caught on something called a security camera. Now everybody who saw it thinks they know what I’m supposed to look like and I'm stuck with it!
Ahh well, there are other dimensions...
