The body that Erynne had found herself inhabiting had real Wiccan power. That'd raised the question of whether the owner had somehow taken Erynne's body for a reason.

(That was a worrying thought. I'd been wondering why the girl would need that kind of strength and speed - and the fast healing. She'd done far better on the deal than Erynne had, for several reasons. She might have regretted taking that particular body by nightfall, of course - or perhaps she'd needed to be a wolf.)

Once I was smoking through Sunnydale it was clear that a lot of body-swapping had gone on. It seemed likely to be due to release of the souls the Anasazi stole - but if it was ... I started wondering if it was straight exchanges. Would the Tara-girl have Erynne's body? Or was it hosting a Chaos-demon, or worse?

The body of that newspaper reporter - Angelina, or some such name, was almost tearing down a door in the hospital, shouting that his/her wife was in labour and she/he had to get to her now! There was too much emotion about and I lost the trail for a while. I'm still wondering what happened to Erynne before I found her.

I caught up with her at a new bar, The Vulgar Unicorn. She'd run into trouble, all right, but not the kind either of us had expected. At least I was able to deal with part of it.

She'd found Helen, too, and Grant turned up a few moments later. He'd known a warlock who could do bodyswaps, but he didn't know how it was done.

He had a few words of advice about it, though. I was all in favour of Erynne taking no chances while she was trapped in that vulnerable, mortal body, but it was increasingly clear that we'd have to find her body too, and keep it safe until we could return her to herself.

(If that was possible. I didn't say it aloud but she looked at me, thinking the same thing. That was going to pose problems. My mojo can be fine for finding people - if it doesn't matter too much if they're too emotional if I do. I thought it was a lot too risky under the circumstances, though.)

We all went back to William Tallisker House together. That would normally mean that things would be quiet. Grant is around 6 feet 5, and to the mojo-sensitive he's got werewolf vibes, plus a few mental over-and-underlays.

He doesn't look for trouble and the kind of trouble that we get in Sunnydale usually has sense enough not to find him. I didn't think to warn him that things might be different now, even though I'd already been through the mess that was soul-swap Sunnydale.

Once we got back we finished up most of the Thanksgiving food. If I'd been in any doubt that the woman who came back to me was Erynne it would have been settled later. She was having a restless night. As usual, it showed itself by a strong desire to be wrapped in blankets.

It doesn't matter how many there are on a bed. If she goes to sleep with something on her mind she'll get them all, and wrap herself into a tight cocoon that ought to have, "Do not disturb" printed on it.

She was probably safer in the boarding house than anywhere else. I waited until she was deep asleep before I smoked out.
