I'm sure I've written or sung about this in the past and the question's a dig I don't appreciate. I wanted a nice, powerful magic talent so I wouldn't have to leave the world I knew. Maybe a Healer - people always need Healers, even where I come from, and they're a powerful group. I didn't think so much about that aspect when I was a sprat, but it matters.
I used to watch the storms sometimes and wonder about being one of the cloud-herders. I guess every kid's wanted to be a weather-witch after seeing the twisters go twirling away from the city and out over the sea when the cloud-herders have to turn them.
It's elementary magic really - hell, the pun was unintentional, but from what I've heard they do it by manipulating heat and cold to get the winds to blow where they want them. It's impressive, flashy stuff but part of it's chemistry or physics or something. They go to a special school for it but most of them stay in the home dimension. It's a gift that wanes fast as they get older, but any community is glad to have a few retired weather-witches to act as rain wardens. Even the kids know how useful they are.
The talent I did develop is impressive and flashy enough and I went to a special school for it, too, once we knew what was coming, but nobody's asking me to move in next door and improve the neighborhood. Not even in a song.

Date: 2006-05-01 09:30 am (UTC)Crysalomacing's a charm that I know not. The stones don't sing for me, though I know places where they dance. If you wanted to see the silent folk and hear what they feel then mayhap you should have dreamed of a talent like mine, they sing well enough and rarely burn, for they conceal little from themselves.
It's the way of us all to want the talents we lack and to think our own skills common. I must have sung from my youth, but carrying a tune is like talking and dancing almost like running - and how could anyone not set a rhythm to the world?
