Liberating Army Surplus 4
May. 19th, 2003 08:57 pmI guess you could say I was playing games for a bit, just checking things out, though. After a while I got my mind back on business and went back to searching. I still couldn't see any way of getting gas from the containers, although I thought Percy might have some ideas on that.
There were a lot of batteries - I loaded up one of those laptop computers from the nearest office-hut. There was even a small but good tape and CDVD player on a desk- all of it portable and powered. I was surprised by some of the gear that the soldier-boys seemed to have left, even in that one hut. It was almost as though as though some of them hadn't expected to go.
I was probably a bit distracted by marshalling the arguements in favour of taking her with us - I had a feeling that it probably wasn't really a good idea to do it. There was likely to be some kind of fuss. I was rehearsing the coming conversion in my head as I assessed the bulk of what I'd taken against the probable storage capacity of the Mustang. We'd get more loot if we did it my way.
She was ready to go, no problems with that all. I was still thinking of the arguments in favour as I drove back to where I'd last seen Percy and Sam.
One of the most intoxicating pictures in my mind was barrelling down the street with the siren blaring - but "think of the entrances we could make!" wasn't so likely to appeal to the others. Would either of them see the appeal of driving her at full speed? With the cars parting to let us through and even the police getting out of the way?
She had all the props, too. Everything on the dashboard read functional, full or ready. They'd kept her topped up and ready to run - it was why I'd been able to take her so easily. They hadn't feared vandals, either. No sensible person working on the base would have harmed her, Humans respect these things. I'd half-expected the fire-truck to be diffcult to manage, but she handled with unexpected ease.
I drove her out onto the parade-ground and waited for the others, waiting to see their reactions to what I'd found.....
