It’s never easy to get exactly the right Minions, and I hate it when I lose any. That doesn’t happen as often as you might think, even though my Gigs can be dangerous.
I worked out a routine long ago. The job description says a lot about dancing (in and out of costume;) but it don’t say much about fighting. That can happen, too.
We’ve got a very well rehearsed routine for when the script requires that the Minions fight. They take a dive as fast as they can. They don’t even have to make it look all that real, just drop into the most comfortable position for their species.
(That’s flat on his back with his arms out for the Nimwellian. So far we’ve always managed things so nobody trips over him.)
From there they just get teleported out of danger as fast as I can do it, but that can have the wrong effect on humans. If they see it they seem to get the idea I’m more vulnerable without Minions! That’s why I memorize exactly what they look like when they’re down and then just project the image as though they were still there.
(That’s been rehearsed a lot and I felt a real fool when I finally saw the Gig that was caught on security camera. I'd got the images perfectly. The lead Minion lay there without a button out of place right through the last part of the Gig. The trouble was that I couldn’t see the spot. He'd dropped almost under the stage – so once things warmed up I kept forgetting exactly where he was supposed to be. The effect was kind of weird, but I don’t think anyone noticed. They’d got problems of their own, by then.
Anyway, my mind must be wandering. It’s just that the lead Minion went down a misrouting portal with a new recruit, a while back. Talented guy, good with the practical stuff – and loyal. I didn’t want to lose either one of them. We don’t leave our people in there, but that was a big dimension and when I checked I lost the trail.
I guess I was missing a trick. If I throw a Gig there the odds are that those two will find me. They’ve got talent enough to recognize me anywhere.
