Even the big inter-dimensional computer that his people had been experimenting with might have had trouble working out the oldest operative’s year of birth. Time passes differently in the various dimensions and, back then, the years were counted differently even across the borders of some landlocked countries.
The question of the old demon’s Chinese Zodiac sign came up during the Purple Emperor Gig and the whole computer network was down anyway. (Literally; part of it was being sent to the Trechna dimension for repairs, and everyone knows that you can’t get much lower than that!)
The operative had no opinion on the subject at all – so he handed the task over to his house-Minions and smoked off to parts unknown. The Minions didn’t have much hope of solving the problem and they went on arguing about how impossible the task was even after they’d found out where China is.
(The Nimwellian stormed out in a dramatic rage after pointing out that the year of the old demon’s birth couldn’t have been named under the Chinese system anyway. Humans weren’t even domesticating cattle back then, let alone taking liberties with them, and “The Year of the Ox” was named after a neutered bull... He was talking nonsense and knew it, but by then parts of the broken abacus were getting buried in the drifts of screwed up paper as the others wearily tried to count the years backward.)
When they did work out what his sign was likely to be nobody wanted to be the one to tell the Operative. He hated the creatures and wouldn’t like the idea of being associated with one. However, he hated untruths more and, after one of the Minions had finally got into an Internet Nexus and checked the Chinese Zodiac characteristics they knew they’d got it right.
There really was only one sign that the old operative could possibly be.
