singindemonhq: (life is but a song - Erynne)

I've always liked just curling up with Erynne and listening to her talk. It's one of the really good things. This time we were discussing our customs - .

I remembered Erynne telling me how the first of her Clan married. The way it's worked out, I guess we've done everything according to the Lore - but with a few twists. Looks like we've followed every custom, hers, mine and theirs. She wears my talisman and a ring, but I wear something of hers, too.

By the custom for field operatives, the bride sees a burning before or during the ceremony. We'd done more. Anything can happen during a gig and Quaverel has a long history. I know it's not the first time that a talisman bride has helped the operative to get a target - but that is unusual. I saw "http://www.livejournal.com/users/blood__moon/2003/05/16/ "> Erynne in action long before that, anyway. I guess that’d count as an uncontrolled change.

The way things have worked out, I'd almost believe that the Powers took a hand in things for Erynne and me. I'm a great believer in enjoying the inevitable, and we suit each other pretty well.

Erynne said that denial wouldn't change what we are, and I was thinking that it's as well that we enjoy that too. I was just on the edge of sleep, thinking again that I'd made a mistake in planning to build the mojo up in London. Then the baby started to cry. Erynne stirred, but I heard Amber, the kid's mother, get up and go to her.

Erynne's Sister-in-Law is pure human, as far as I know, and she'd been nervous about seeing her husband Change when they married. I was thinking it was just as well that she didn't know what her kid's Auntie and I had been talking about!

That got me thinking about humans in general. Most of them claim to get the horrors over the burnings, but they've had witch-hunts and torture chambers for as long as I've known about them. Time passes differently on Quaverel, and I've been to gigs in a lot of places. That's why I'd made the mistake of trying to build up the mojo in London.

Now, visitors go to the Tower to see history. In history, few wanted to go to the Tower! Traitors Gate was a last landmark for a lot of people. The Tower used to be - well, when they called one part the Bloody Tower they meant it literally...

I decided to show it to Erynne before we left, in the hope that she'd see what I meant. Some human things change quite fast. When I knew it the Tower was a place of horror - it's changed. Some human things don't change at all, though.

I'd seen a dungeon where the wretched prisoners were psyched up enough to welcome the fire, quite recently - under Sunnydale, the place that I'd rushed us through and away. (We'd have been safer with the old Tower. We're not political and we are not British aristocracy. Theirs has nothing to do with magic talent at all.)

OK, this was a not sensible train of thought right before sleeping. I dreamed of the laboratory again. This time they had the samples that they'd taken from half-changer Caiomhe when she was born - and Erynne and Little-Frog-nearly-niece were in the opposite cage........
