singindemonhqI've been around this dimension for years - I mean centuries, you know? You humans change the superficial things about yourselves pretty fast. (Not the basics. In one century you burn witches and heretics, in another you lobotomise eccentrics and political deviants and such. You usually target the same kinds of people - your labels change but a lot of your set-ups don't. Now what put me in mind of that? Oh yes, when you discovered fire - or rather, when you thought you'd tamed it. That was one of your big changes.)
One thing that doesn't change much is that most of you don't really use magic. Oh, you'll call someone up or cast a love-spell or something, but you don't read the manual and learn how to do it right, why it works and what it costs. Some of your dimensions have schools for magic and such, but mostly you just blunder on - like a caveman setting fire to his bed when he tries to warm the furs with this bright new toy. I got used to your dimensions being pretty uncomfortable, because of that.
The first time I dropped in on the twentieth century I got a surprise, all right. You had lights in front of your houses. Not the old torches, spluttering in the rain and blowing toward the thatch in an ill wind, not even gas-lights, I was used to those - but this trip the streets were like ribbons of light. There were lights in the houses, too, and none of them were fire-colored! Then I found out that you’d made ways to box up music and play it at back at whim!
I thought you’d found a way to saddle and bridle magic and send it out to dance while you called the tune! It gave me some bad moments, too. I’ve found out more since. I can use it. I am using it – but, do you really know how electricity works? I don’t.( I think it’s just a kind of up-grade for what you did with fire, but … ) Have you figured out what it costs yet? Magic always has a price. Humans mostly don't look at the price-tag, and I don't understand that either.
