Hey, me? Now what do you think? How do you see me? Down at the bar on karaoke night, helping the clients to stay in tune? Maybe with the guys telling me I’ve got time for one more drink before I go home to the little missus? Maybe having a laugh with some of the other operatives about the first hot number in the Gig? Seriously, what do you mean by a friend, anyway?
I must have heard a hundred versions of one song. It tends to come up at around 3a.m., when the lyrics get regretful and the smoke gets in their eyes, when some of the clients start working out just how they got into whatever spot they’re in.
It always goes something like this,
In my schooldays I was shy,
And pretty much a spaz,
Nobody would stun the Prom
With me.
So I planned to get attention
Show I had pizzazz,
Have the others swing along
With me,
I just did a little bit,
To show my face
Would really fit,
Just a thing to fit in with the gang,
So I ended up just where I am.
In my youth I saw the others
Take to drugs or drink,
Youth is kind of
Peer-group pressury
No one wants rejection
And acceptance makes you think,
Being like the others
makes you free.
Somehow chances drifted by,
It does no good to sit and cry,
And everyone needs friends,
We know that’s true.
Oh my friends,
The things I did for you…
I’ve heard variations of that one from everything from Wicca to guys in alleys begging for their next fix. It leads to more hot numbers than you’d expect, too. It’s enough to put you off friendship for life.
On the other hands, friends tell you their secrets, right? They’re drawn to you, they confide in you and they keep you entertained? Looked at that way I’ve had hundreds. More friends than I could count without a year to do it.
Humans speak the truth even without mojo sometimes, and there’s a saying of yours that might apply to some of those.
It can take a long time to make a friend but it takes five minutes to lose one.

Isn't that the big romantic thing?
Surely for the humans
It's the way you ought to feel?
Isn't that what all your dreamers sing?

Of course, sometimes when they desert,
they've simply drifted out of life.

Tell me how we can be together when we can stand in the same room at the same time and not see one another because we are in different dimensions.

Date: 2006-08-17 06:37 pm (UTC)Seeing a different dimension is a good trick, if you can do it. It takes too much energy to be worth it, where I come from - but passing through? You just ... *Makes an "onward" gesture,* Just open a portal and go...

Life isn't that easy, it's not a show where you can make anything happen. There's not singing and dancing. It's real and it hurts and there is nothing you can do but live.

Date: 2006-08-17 07:34 pm (UTC)and life can be a show.
And I really can smoke out and go
and portal to and fro...
Why should worlds collide?
Just steer clear of Keys
Shed no blood to pass
Then go as you please.
Life can be a show
where people sing,
and sometimes people dance
and that's another thing.
But sure, life is pain,
Sing your song, Dance your way,
It will happen again,
Till the close, of the day.
*Stops and watches her,*
If your Doctor didn't come for you maybe he didn't know all he thought - or maybe he doesn't make house calls? You could find someone to change the scene for you, someone who knows more. But you'd have to figure out how to call for help.
*Laughs - and then suddenly there is nothing but a drift of scarlet smoke*
