Hey, me? Now what do you think? How do you see me? Down at the bar on karaoke night, helping the clients to stay in tune? Maybe with the guys telling me I’ve got time for one more drink before I go home to the little missus? Maybe having a laugh with some of the other operatives about the first hot number in the Gig? Seriously, what do you mean by a friend, anyway?
I must have heard a hundred versions of one song. It tends to come up at around 3a.m., when the lyrics get regretful and the smoke gets in their eyes, when some of the clients start working out just how they got into whatever spot they’re in.
It always goes something like this,
In my schooldays I was shy,
And pretty much a spaz,
Nobody would stun the Prom
With me.
So I planned to get attention
Show I had pizzazz,
Have the others swing along
With me,
I just did a little bit,
To show my face
Would really fit,
Just a thing to fit in with the gang,
So I ended up just where I am.
In my youth I saw the others
Take to drugs or drink,
Youth is kind of
Peer-group pressury
No one wants rejection
And acceptance makes you think,
Being like the others
makes you free.
Somehow chances drifted by,
It does no good to sit and cry,
And everyone needs friends,
We know that’s true.
Oh my friends,
The things I did for you…
I’ve heard variations of that one from everything from Wicca to guys in alleys begging for their next fix. It leads to more hot numbers than you’d expect, too. It’s enough to put you off friendship for life.
On the other hands, friends tell you their secrets, right? They’re drawn to you, they confide in you and they keep you entertained? Looked at that way I’ve had hundreds. More friends than I could count without a year to do it.
Humans speak the truth even without mojo sometimes, and there’s a saying of yours that might apply to some of those.
It can take a long time to make a friend but it takes five minutes to lose one.

Ask him what he thinks about
the other girls he sees,
ask him if he plans proposing
right down on his knees,
If you want to pick a male
whose almost sure to please,
you should always judge him
on his dancing!
If he's planning marriage
then you should be sure of it.
Sometimes humans have a brain
or just a little wit.
But if you don't want to pick
a type whose just unfit -
you should always judge them
on their dancing!
