I don't think Cathy had quite believed me about the problems until she touched the computer herself, leaning forward with her hands flat on the consule and seeming to listen to something that I couldn't hear. After a moment her hands started to glow, and I thought she asked me if someone had fragged it. I'd never permitted anyone to really abuse it, and I've tried to keep my temper with it myself - but as soon as the evil, spiteful thing the computer started to put on its usual performance I think she saw why people might lose patience with it.

The icons came up on the screen behind the notice that said

"Windows cannot detect your keyboard. Press any key to continue."

It can be quite difficult to get past that point, but Cathy commented that it was an evil error notice, all right, and did something with the mouse that made the computer beep nastily and move on. After a few more moments the sign saying,

"This programme has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated with extreme prejudice, in accordance with the Lore", showed up, and half the icons disappeared... That's one of the points that I can rarely get past.

Cathy modulated her voice almost like a mother singing a lullaby and, when she said "I know you've been working hard under difficult conditions." I reacted to the sympathy and told her what a nightmare it'd been, plus some things about what the mechanical monster was doing by then, even though she could perfectly well see that for herself. Then I realised she'd been talking to the computer!

This is what the thing was doing by then...

Now the C-drive is reporting that the D-drive isn't there,
The illegal operation signs can drive me to despair,
And the mouse is in the socket, but the double-clicks abort,
The computer doesn't realise that the plug is in the port,
And the icons are corrupted until Windows looks obscene,
And the side effects of gauss are playing havoc with the screen,
And the cross-dimensional input puts the index in a hash,
Then I'll lose the modem input, 'cause the system's going to crash.
