I had one of the fancy backgrounds and the print was so small and faint that I couldn't read my own journal! Could anyone tell me how to make a better job of that?

Can you provide a few more details? What fancy background?

It was the expressive theme with a cityscape. It gave me a good range of options on comments, etc. but the print was so faint that I couldn't read my journal or friends page, even with i.e. text size set at largest.

(The Mun has poor vision.)

Okay, I'm poking around with it now. I think the problem comes when you choose the cityscape, since the contrast between the text and the background isn't the greatest (that seems to be a problem with the Expressive layout in general). I don't think there's any way to fix this if you don't have the coding skills (which I don't, I never bothered to learn).

Thank you for trying. The other options in expressive didn't show on my monitor, so I don't know if anything would give me better contrast or larger print. If I give this Muse a theme called Bunnylicious I don't think he'll ever sing to me again!

I don't understand why they won't show on your monitor, but there might be another layout that would work. I don't know your taste well enough to recommend any, though.
