My base does have power - as far as I know it's not from a generator, either. (It could be, though. Where I come from we've not known for taking chances and having our own supply would probably be a sensible thing to do. So if I'm now on back-up power how do I check? The computer probably knows, but I don't have a "fine manual" to read.) I may be far enough out of town to be getting electricity from the next area, anyway. The lights are on in the houses beyond the river.
The computer seems to be working perfectly - but for one thing. There is nothing from Quaverell! Zilch!
I suppose I knew, at some level, all along. It's the home dimension that broke contact. It probably happened back beforethis ghastly gadget, the mechanical moron, I have got to break that habit of thinking the Mechanical Minion started to go really wrong.
Quaverell is deliberately inaccessible anyway. We just don't want outsiders smoking in - or teleporting, or whatever. The portals are always guarded and only citizens get in, with certain special exceptions. But every portal to that whole complex of dimensions has been down every time I checked - and for so long! That's probably more than a dimensional inversion - or is it?
Time goes differently in different dimensions - in this one it goes so fast that it's unexpected, but I've also spent time in Hystalgia and a few other places where, on the evidence, time went even faster - and I didn't keep track. I don't know how long has passed at home. Operatives can clock up quite a difference between recorded time and elapsed time.(Fortunately expenses, etc. come through at local rate.)
It's beenquite a very long time for me, but things are different at home. It's even possible that things went wrong before the long vac., someone procrastinated and they'll get on it after the breaks... If it happened during the wrong season - they could be noticing that something's gone wrong anytime now ...
I need to prepare some D.P.O.C.Discs anyway.
