A big thank you to everyone who nominated me at the most recent Tammy Awards and thank you to everyone who voted for me.

I like those Tammys. It’s something about the look of that mule. The expression (and the kick, of course.) It reminds of some of the humans I’ve known. It’ll be nice to have Tammys on both sides of the display cabinet.

I’ve won quite a number of awards in my life, of course. I actually won the Liscar Flitch in the 16th century – with the queen I had at the time, of course. You’ve maybe heard about that? The award for the couple who’ve managed to stay married for the longest time without trying to kill each other? (At least one of them has to be human, or the Drosscar demons'd get it every time.)

(I forgot, you might not have heard of that one. I think they discontinued it after one of the contestants found out her husband was unfaithful and called a Vengeance Demon right there to the ceremony. The thing that really annoyed the Committee was that the couple won, and they won every year afterward. Getting your spouse turned into a living statuette and then keeping him in a dolls house in the kitchen ain’t murder , not technically…)

I’ve got one Award that’s in the centre of my display cabinet. It’s part of the regalia on really special occasions. Everything else is arranged to kind of focus on it. It’s very plain. When they first see it some people think it’s just a transparent column, bounded in gold at top and bottom. That award seems to attract the light and it imprisons it in thousands of tiny rainbows trapped inside. Some viewers think it’s magic, or some kind of force-field.

One day that will be taken away and awarded to someone else.

It’s all one huge diamond, the size of a goose egg, just cut smooth and round. Too big and heavy to wear, set to be the top of a kind of wizards staff. (You can see something like it if you look at the British Crown Jewels. They call theirs “The Cullinan” - something like that, anyway. It's the ball on the top of the sceptre and it makes the Koh-i-noor look like a reject from a cracker factory.)

There it is, in the centre of the display. A little more transparent than ice and old

It's the Award for the Field Operative who’s survived longest. I’m really glad I’ve got that. I intend to hang onto it for just as long as I can.

Proud ain't the word.

We don’t get to retire, in my job.
